The best way for governments to solve traffic congestion is to provide free public transport 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Have you been used to an annoying situation: while you had started a journey on wheel, or just traveled on your way to office with a piece of beautiful song played, you would have foreseen, almost surely, that what was waiting for you was just a serious traffic jam crammed with cars and lorries, bumper to bumper. Traffic issues resulting from private vehicles nowadays seize the reformers in governments, who may even outline proposals for an entire state-funded public transportation system. However, is it the optimal cure of this acute urban disease?

Often likened to maelstroms, the traffic congestions in mega cities are actually only one major issue faced by human beings. But this time, the demons are released by ourselves: with the rapid development of technology, the endless pursuit of efficiency and the voracity of capitalism, the thriving automobile industry is an inevitable outcome. Thus, to exalt public transportation above private one by improving its allure to the general public appears to be an effective way to eliminate the problems. But how? One of the advocates is to make the entire system free of charge for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

However, such a practise would unavoidably incur criticism. First of all, try to imagine the number of buses, metro trains nowadays employed in a metropolis. The daily cost of their maintenance is just enormous, to say nothing of the road or rail systems. Secondly, the real impetus behind driving private cars for many drivers, especially those wealthy ones, is actually generated not by an imagined low cost, but by the convenience and flexibility. Therefore, the attraction of public transportation cannot be significantly raised solely by lowering the price of public transportation.

In conclusion, In an effort to improve traffic conditions, public transportation serves as an reasonable orientation. However, to only focus on the cost cannot help the government to hit the mark.
